Mulțumesc foarte mult! I did not know the difference between "mulțumesc" and "mulțumim", either. I had seen it on my groups on Facebook, but there was no explanation for the meanings.

Thank you for your question.

Both words mean "thank you".

"Mulțumesc" is used when one person says ”thank you”. You can also say ”Eu mulțumesc...”/ ”I thank/ give thanks...”

”Mulțumim” is used when more people say ”thank you”. You can also say ”Noi mulțumim...”/ ”We thank/ give thanks...”

Examples:

Mulțumesc, Gerri, pentru întrebarea ta./ (I) thank you, Gerri, for your question.

Mulțumim, Gerri, pentru întrebarea ta./ (We) thank you, Gerri, for your question.
