How many times have you been on a trip with your camera, trying to immortalize an epic moment? In Romania, there are so many amazing landscapes and people to tempt your camera that you won’t be able put it away! I know you don’t want to jeopardize your marvelous album in Romania. That’s why we’ll be devoting this lesson to more photo phrases. |
BODY |
In the last lesson we learned how to ask someone to take your picture: |
Puteți să îmi faceți o poză? |
But what can you do if you want to take someone else’s picture? Sometimes with people that you don’t know this request can be bothersome. That’s why you must be as nice as you can. |
“Excuse me, can I take your picture, please?” in Romanian is |
Mă scuzați, pot să vă fac o poză, vă rog? |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Mă scu-zați, pot să vă fac o po-ză vă rog? |
Once more: |
Mă scuzați, pot să vă fac o poză, vă rog? |
You definitely know the meaning of Mă scuzați and Vă rog, so let’s explain the rest of our phrase. |
Pot is a form of the verb that means “to be able to”. |
(slow) Pot. |
Pot. |
Next comes să vă fac, which means “to make you.” |
(slow) Să vă fac. |
Să vă fac. |
After that comes o poză, which means “one picture” or “a picture”. |
(slow) O po-ză. |
O poză. |
Altogether, we have |
(slow) Mă scu-zați, pot să vă fac o po-ză vă rog? |
Mă scuzați, pot să vă fac o poză, vă rog? |
In situations that don’t call for politeness, such as if you’re asking to take a young person’s photo, you can ask |
Pot să îți fac o poză? |
(slow) Pot să îți fac o po-ză? |
Pot să îți fac o poză? |
The only thing we changed here was the word îți, which is the singular “you.” We changed it to Să îți fac. |
(slow) Să îți fac. |
Să îți fac. |
Once again the whole question is |
Pot să îți fac o poză? |
Other situations where you’ll need permission to take pictures are when you are at museums, art galleries, churches, and shops. |
“Can I take pictures in here?” in Romanian is |
Pot să fac poze aici? |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Pot să fac po-ze a-ici? |
And once again: |
Pot să fac poze aici? |
The first words pot să fac are translated as “I am able to make”. |
The second word, poze, is the plural form of the word poză meaning “picture” and aici means “here”. |
(slow) A-ici |
Aici |
So the whole question is |
(slow) Pot să fac po-ze a-ici? |
Pot să fac poze aici? |
