In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask where things are located. In this lesson, we’ll introduce you to another useful phrase to find a place. This lesson’s phrase is “Is there a (place) near here?”
BODY
First, we need a place. Let’s use the word spital, which means “hospital"
(slow) Spi-tal.
Spital.
In Romanian, “Is there a hospital near here?” is
Este un spital în apropiere?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Es-te un spi-tal în a-pro-pi-e-re?
Once again:
Este un spital în apropiere?
The first word, este , can be translated in English as “there is”
(slow) Es-te.
Este.
Next comes un spital meaning “a hospital”.
After that comes in apropiere, these two words together mean “around” or “near here”
(slow) În a-pro-pi-e-re.
În apropiere.
All together, we have
Este un spital în apropiere?
Don’t forget to add the polite expression mă scuzați, meaning “excuse me”, at the beginning.
Replace the word un spital with any other word and your question will still be perfect.
Imagine you need to withdraw some money from your bank account.
In Romanian, “Is there an ATM near here?” is
Este un bancomat în apropiere?
The only word that changes is the thing you’re looking for, in this case bancomat.
(slow) Ban-co-mat.
Bancomat.
(slow) Es-te un ban-co-mat în a-pro-pi-e-re?
Este un bancomat în apropiere?
REVIEW
Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so mult noroc , which means "Good luck!" in Romanian.
