The traditional Romanian market, known as Piaţa, is a place where you can find almost everything. Romanians like these marketplaces and go there especially for buying fruits, vegetables, dairy, and other fresh produce, since they are organic which often makes them healthier. If you would like to know more about traditions and traditional flavors, the Piaţa is a place you must visit during your stay in Romania.
BODY
Normally, when you are interested in buying something, you greet the seller first. Then you ask the questions from the previous lessons, Cât costă? and La ce preţ este? After finding out the price, let’s say you want to buy a kilogram of traditional Romanian cheese. You will have to say:
Un kilogram de telemea vă rog.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Un ki-lo-gram de te-le-mea vă rog.
Once more:
Un kilogram de telemea vă rog.
The first two words, un kilogram, mean “one kilogram”. They could also be translated as “a kilogram”.
Next we have de telemea.
De means “of” and telemea is the word for a traditional sort of cheese.
(slow) Te-le-mea.
Telemea.
Last we have vă rog which you might remember as being the Romanian equivalent for “please”.
The whole sentence together is:
Un kilogram de telemea vă rog.
Let’s say that you would like to buy two kilograms of apples. In this case, say:
Două kilograme de mere vă rog.
(slow) Do-uă ki-lo-gra-me de me-re vă rog.
You already know the meaning of the words două and kilograme.
Next we have de mere which is translated as
“of apples”.
(slow) De me-re.
De mere.
The whole phrase is:
Două kilograme de mere vă rog.
Some sellers import the merchandise from another country, but you might want to make sure that what you’re buying is a Romanian product. All you have to ask if this:
Este producţie românească?
“Is it a Romanian product?”
(slow)Es-te pro-duc-ţi-e ro-mâ-nea-scă?
Este is the present tense form of the verb that means “to be”.
(slow) Es-te.
Este.
Productie means “production”.
(slow) Pro-duc-ţi-e.
Producţie.
And at the end we have românească. which
means “Romanian.”
(slow) Ro-mâ-neas-că.
Românească.
Let’s hear the whole question one more time:
Este producție românească?
