Bună tuturor! Sunt Raluca. Hi everybody! I’m Raluca. Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian.
In the last lesson, you learned how to ask "Where" questions in Romanian.
This time, you are going to ask questions using "When?" In Romanian, Când
So let’s go! Haideți să începem!
Imagine you want to ask when your roommate is coming back home. You will ask ¿Când revii acasă?
[slowly] ¿Când revii acasă?
So let’s break down this question.
First we had- Când, which is "When".
revii is the verb A reveni meaning "to come back", in the 2nd person present indicative form. So the pronoun for "you", is again omitted from the sentence.
And finally we have acasă which is "home."
So, all together it is ¿Când revii acasă?
meaning "When will you come back home?"
In Romanian, "When" is translated into the word Când. For example, if you want to ask "When were you born?" it would be ¿Când te-ai născut?
Like in English, the interrogative word is placed in the 1st position and then comes the verb. It’s exactly the same structure as Ce and Unde.
Let’s take a look at another example-
How can you say "When did you arrive?"
It’s really simple since it is exactly the same pattern ¿Când ai ajuns?
First we have Când, which is "When"
Then comes the verb ai ajuns which is the conjugated form of a ajunge or ”to arrive” in 2nd person past tense.
¿Când ai ajuns?
Now, let’s look at some more questions you could ask with the the question word Când:
To ask "Until when?" in Romanian is very easy. You can translate it directly. It becomes ¿Până când?
So for example, if you want to ask a friend "Until when are you going to stay here?" it would be, ¿Până când stai aici?
Just add Până meaning “Until” before când.
Simple, isn’t it?
On the other hand, to ask “from when” an action has been taking place in Romanian, you could use the question phrase ¿De când? as in ¿De cand aștepți? That means "How long have you been waiting?"
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights.
A very common Romanian expression that uses the word când is - când o zbura porcul and it literally means “when pigs fly”. You can use this when you want to say in a funny way that something will never happen.
In this lesson, you learned how to correctly use the Romanian question word for "When", which is Când, and also its different variations. In the next lesson, you’ll learn more about asking questions with "Who" in Romanian. I’ll be waiting for you in the next Româna în 3 minute lesson. Pe curând! See you soon!
