Bună tuturor! Sunt Raluca. Hi everybody! I’m Raluca. |
Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian. |
In the last lesson, you learned how to use Romanian adjectives. |
In this lesson, we will continue talking about some of the most common Romanian verbs. You will hear these ones all the time! |
The verb you will learn in this lesson is a merge, which means "to go" and we will use it to talk about many different destinations. So let’s go! |
To say you’re going somewhere in Romanian, the pattern is Merg la.... plus your destination. |
Merg is the first person form of the verb a merge, meaning "to go" in the present tense. It is equivalent to “I am going” |
La connects the verb and the destination, so it’s like “to” in English. |
So imagine someone asks you ¿Unde mergi în vacanță? This means "Where are you going on vacation?" |
If you are going to the beach, for example, you will say Merg la plajă. |
[slowly] Merg la plajă. |
That’s Merg, which is “I am going”, and then la, meaning “to”, then plajă, which is “the beach”. |
Pretty simple, right? Let’s hear it again. |
Merg la plajă. |
Let’s see some more examples. |
Merg la bancă. means “I’m going to the bank.” |
Merg la farmacie. means “I’m going to the pharmacy.” |
El merge foarte încet. means “He walks very slowly.” And... |
Avionul merge fără oprire. means “The airplane flies non-stop.” |
As you can see, a merge has different meanings beyond “to go”. |
Let’s take a look at what can you say with the verb a merge in Romanian. |
Sometimes it can mean “to attend”, as in a merge la facultate, meaning “go to college” or a merge la școală, meaning “go to school”. |
Sometimes, it can also mean “to be harmonious”, or “matching” as in roșul merge cu negrul. which means “Red goes with black”. |
You’ll also find this verb in different expressions like merge treaba meaning “it works well” or merge mână în mână which means “to belong together”. |
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights. |
If you want to say you’re going somewhere with somebody, you have to add the word cu, which means “with”. For example- |
Merg cu fratele meu. meaning “I’m going with my brother”. |
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb a merge and the correct linking words that go with it to talk about your destination. |
Next time, we’ll learn another very useful verb, a face. Do you remember what this verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Româna în 3 minute lesson. |
