Bună tuturor! Sunt Raluca. Hi everybody! I’m Raluca.
Welcome to RomanianPod101.com’s Româna în 3 minute. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Romanian.
In the last lesson, you learned how to talk about age using the verb a avea, meaning “to have.”
You can probably guess that a avea can also be used to talk about things you own. That will be the topic of this lesson.
We’ll start with ¿Ai mașină?
[slowly] ¿Ai mașină?
This means “Do you have a car?”
Let’s take a closer look at this question.
Ai, means “Do you have”. It is the conjugated form of the verb a avea for the 2nd person singular.
And then we have mașină, which means “car”.
Let’s say you *do* have a car, how can you reply in Romanian?
Just turn the verb a avea into the 1st person — it’s really simple! You did it during the last lesson to talk about your age, remember?
The first person of a avea is Am...
So in this case you can reply:
Da, am mașină. meaning “Yes, I have a car” or Am mașină. or meaning “I have a car.”
[slowly] Da, am mașină.
[slowly] Am mașină.
You can say Da, meaning “yes”, but it's not necessary because your reply is already affirmative.
Now it’s time for Raluca’s Insights.
If you want to ask for something that you think someone has, you can also use this sentence. Here’s an example.
Ai câine, nu? This literally means “You have a dog, right?”
You only have to add the word nu after the sentence. It makes the whole sentence sound like a question, even if you know or can guess the answer.
In recent lessons, we have talked about the verb a fi meaning “to be”, and a avea, meaning “to have”.
Next time, we’ll learn how to use these two verbs in their negative forms in order to say “I’m not” and “I don’t have”.
I'll be waiting for you in the next Româna în 3 minute lesson.
Pe curând! See you soon!
