INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to RomanianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 5 - Using Reported Speech in Romanian. Dana Here.
Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai.
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about reported speech. The conversation takes place in the park.
Mihai: It's between Petru Mareș and Maria Mareș.
Dana: The speakers are family members; therefore, they will speak informal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Maria Mareș: Tu ce părere ai despre cum s-a integrat în noua școală?
Petru Mareș: Hm, încă e la început. Nu știu ce să zic. Mi se pare că se descurcă destul de bine.
Maria Mareș: Eu mă simt puțin îngrijorată de relația ei cu fetele din clasă. Mi-a zis că sunt vreo două cu care nu se înțelege defel.
Petru Mareș: Da? Mie îmi zice în schimb că i-ar plăcea să organizeze o petrecere de ziua ei și să invite pe toată lumea. Poate e doar o fază de acomodare.
Maria Mareș: Da, e adevărat. Și mie mi-a zis despre această idee. Cred că s-ar bucura foarte mult să facem asta.
Petru Mareș: Perfect. Am putea să o implicăm și pe buni, atunci. Demult își dorește să participe la organizarea unui eveniment. Știi doar că îi place asta.
Maria Mareș: Da, sper doar să nu se supere cu Denisa. Ea mi-a zis că uneori buni are idei învechite despre cum se distrează copiii. Sunt amuzante împreună!
Petru Mareș: Minunat, atunci! Poate fi și un prilej de a le mai apropia.
Maria Mareș: Perfect. Eu vorbesc cu buni, tu vorbește cu Denisa.
Petru Mareș: Da. Și nu uita să stai de vorbă și cu diriginta clasei. Am auzit că îi place să fie consultată din timp de părinți pentru orice inițiativă care privește elevii.

Maria Mareș: What do you think about how she has been integrated into the new school?
Petru Mareș: Hm, it's still at the beginning. I do not know what to say. Looks like she's doing pretty well.
Maria Mareș: I feel a little worried about her relationship with the girls in the classroom. She told me there are two girls that she is not getting along with at all.
Petru Mareș: Really? She is telling me instead that she would like to have a birthday party and invite everyone. Maybe she is trying to be accommodating.
Maria Mareș: Yes, it's true. She also told me about this idea. I think she would enjoy that very much.
Petru Mareș: Perfect. We could also involve granny then. She longs to participate in organizing an event. You know how much she likes that.
Maria Mareș: Yeah, I just hope she will not fight with Denisa about it. She told me that sometimes granny has outdated ideas about how children are having fun. They are funny together!
Petru Mareș: Great, then! This may also be an occasion to bring them closer.
Maria Mareș: Perfect. I will talk to granny, you talk to Denisa.
Petru Mareș: Yes. And don't forget to talk to the head teacher. I have heard that she likes to be consulted from the beginning by parents about any initiative that concerns the students.

Dana: Settling into a new school can always be a difficult situation, don’t you think?
Mihai: Yes, I think so. It can be difficult to fit in with new people. It can also be difficult to fit in with family sometimes.
Dana: Speaking of family, what are the demographics of Romania? Is it an aging country?
Mihai: Actually, 45% of the Romanian population is between 25 to 54 years old.
Dana: How many are older than that?
Mihai: About 27%. 25% are younger than 25.
Dana: What’s the average age in Romania?
Mihai: It’s 41 years old, which is much higher than the other European countries.
Dana: So it’s an aging population. What is the population of Romania?
Mihai: It’s around 19 million, and about 90% of them are Romanians.
Dana: Are people scattered evenly around the country, or do the younger people migrate to the cities?
Mihai: They migrate - it gives more job opportunities.

Dana: This means “well.” It literally means “to manage well,” but is translated as “to do well.”
Mihai: You can use this to say that someone or something is doing well.
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say... Maria se descurcă bine la matematică.
Dana: ... which means "Maria is doing well in mathematics."
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about reported speech.
Dana: So, reported speech is when we talk about something someone else has said.
Mihai: We form these sentences by using a subject, then a spune / zice că
Dana: “says that”
Mihai: Followed by a sentence, which is usually what they said.
Dana: There are a few rules to follow when making these sentences.
Mihai: First and second person verbs are changed into third person.
Dana: You should try to reduce the number of words the speaker said, and also take out any words of affection. But, don’t change the meaning, of course!
Mihai: You should also take out any exclamations, interrogations or interjections.
Dana: There are a few other hints that you can read in the lesson notes. Mihai, can we hear an example?
Mihai: Mihai mi-a spus unde o să locuiască când va merge în Japonia și locul acela arată minunat.
Dana: “Mihai told me where he will live when he’ll go to Japan, and the place looks amazing.”
Mihai: Mama îmi zice mereu să plec departe de casă și să îmi fac un viitor.
Dana: “My mom always tells me to go away from home and make a future.” Okay, thank you. Now, let’s look at the conjunction “that.”
Mihai: This is că in Romanian.
Dana: Like other conjunctions, it is used to link two or more words in a sentence, or two or more sentences.
Mihai: It can be used in many different situations.
Dana: Such as to show causality or subjectivity. Time for some examples!
Mihai: Acum, că ne-am înțeles, putem trece mai departe să facem agenda evenimentului
Dana: “Now that we understand each other, we can move on to make the event agenda.”
Mihai: Pentru ea este înfricoșătoare ideea că ar putea să se desprindă hamul când va sări de la înălțimea aceea.
Dana: “It is frightening for her to think that the harness might come off when she will jump from that height.”
Mihai: Ne-a spus că se înțelege mult mai bine cu socrii ei după ce au fost la mare împreună în concediu.
Dana: “She told us that she is getting along much better with her parents-in-law after being at sea together on vacation.”
