INTRODUCTION |
Sydney: Hi everyone, and welcome back to RomanianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 24 - Organizing a Celebration in Romania. Sydney Here. |
Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai. |
Sydney: In this lesson, you’ll learn about non-personal modes of verbs part 2. The conversation takes place in the office. |
Mihai: It's between Bogdan and the secretary. |
Sydney: The speakers are co-workers; therefore, they will speak formal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Sydney: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Bogdan: Ms. Elena, on the twentieth, we will organize a rather informal event with all of our colleagues. Of course, you are invited to participate. |
Secretary: Thank you. I'll save the date. When and where will it be? |
Bogdan: That's what I wanted to talk to you about. I will need some help organizing for everything that has to be done. |
Secretary: Of course. What did you consider, exactly? |
Bogdan: Well, there should be a reservation for a big table in a quieter restaurant, but a special one, so it feels like a festive setting. We will celebrate us passing our semestrial goal. |
Secretary: Nice! I'll make a list of restaurant proposals and send it to you so you can pick the one you like the most. |
Bogdan: Yes. I would also need to think of a symbolic gift for each member. About 16 gifts in total. We have a budget of about 100 lei for each one of them. |
Secretary: Noted. If the gifts are customized, then we will have to hurry up with the order, since it usually takes at least a week to make them. |
Bogdan: Okay. Then, do you think you can send me the list of restaurants and the gift ideas by tomorrow night? After receiving the lists, I will make fast decisions. |
Secretary: Yes of course. Now that I know what I have to do, I will start working immediately. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Sydney: There are often parties and celebrations in the business world. I think I’d like to work for a company that will buy everyone a present for achieving the company goal though! |
Mihai: Me too! The Romanian business world used to be pretty closed off, but after the fall of communism the Romanian market opened up to the international world. |
Sydney: When dealing with business internationally, English is pretty important, isn’t it? |
Mihai: Yeah, as Romania has become more globalized, through things like business and trade, and also entertainment, English has become more important. |
Sydney: Is it expected that employees will know English? |
Mihai: It is a job requirement in some places. Many Romanians now speak English at an experienced level. |
Sydney: In a lot of countries where a second language is highly valued, words often get mixed into the national language. Has that happened in Romanian? |
Mihai: It has! There is romgleză, which is a mix. It started in the business world but has flowed into normal conversations too. |
Sydney: Can you give us a couple of examples of these words? |
Mihai: Sure! să ne focusăm |
Sydney: "Let’s focus." |
Mihai: And, targhetare |
Sydney: "Targeting." Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Sydney: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is... |
Mihai: de la ce oră |
Sydney: meaning "(starting) when." |
Sydney: This expression is an interrogative structure. |
Mihai: It’s made from the compound preposition de la, meaning "from" and the invariable pronoun ce, and then oră. |
Sydney: This is a singular feminine noun that means "hour." You can translate it as "from what hour" or "starting when." |
Mihai: You can use it to ask a question about when something will start. In a more formal situation, you should preface it with nu vă supărați. |
Sydney: This means "excuse me." Can you give us an example using this expression? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say... De la ce oră începe filmul la care ai luat bilete mâine? |
Sydney: ...which means "When does the movie for which you bought tickets start tomorrow?" |
Sydney: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: a se apuca de treabă |
Sydney: meaning "to start working." |
Sydney: This expression is a verbal phrase. |
Mihai: It is made from the reflexive form of the verb a apuca, meaning "to grab," the preposition de, and then treabă. |
Sydney: This is a feminine singular noun that means "work." It literally means "to grab oneself of work," but is translated as "to start working." |
Mihai: You can use it to show that the subject is at the beginning of the work they intend to do. |
Sydney: It’s rather informal. |
Mihai: A more formal version would be a începe să lucreze. |
Sydney: Can you give us an example using this expression? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say... El cum ajunge la birou cum se apucă de treabă fără a-și mai bea întâi cafeaua. |
Sydney: ... which means "As soon as he gets to the office he starts working, without having his coffee first." |
Sydney: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Sydney: In this lesson, you'll learn more about non-personal modes of verbs. |
Sydney: This time, we’ll start by looking at the supine mode. This is a non-personal verbal mode that indicates the purpose or the name of a certain action. |
Mihai: It’s composed of one of several prepositions, and then the invariable form of the participle mode. |
Sydney: What prepositions are used for this? |
Mihai: Either de |
Sydney: "of," |
Mihai: pentru |
Sydney: "for," |
Mihai: la |
Sydney: "at," |
Mihai: de la |
Sydney: "from," |
Mihai: după |
Sydney: "after," |
Mihai: or spre |
Sydney: "to." As the supine mode is a non-personal verbal mode, it can never function as a verbal predicate. |
Mihai: Instead, it’s used for things such as in modal or descriptive structures, as the subject of non-personal verbal phrases or a predicative name. |
Sydney: Amongst other things. There are more listed in the lesson notes. Let’s hear a couple of sentence examples. |
Mihai: Pentru mine este de neînțeles cum a putut face una ca asta. |
Sydney: "For me, it is unimaginable how he could do such a thing." |
Mihai: În viața mea e cam haos în ultimul timp. De exemplu, nu mai știu unde pun lucruri precum mașina de călcat, iar la tuns și la pensat nici nu mai zic de când nu am mai ajuns. |
Sydney: "In my life, it's kind of chaotic lately. For example, I do not know where I put things like the ironing machine, and I do not even remember the last time I went to get a haircut or an eyebrow shaping." Now, let’s look at the gerund mode. This is another non-personal mode, of course, that expresses the circumstance in which a certain action happens or the way that action takes place. |
Mihai: The gerund is made from the infinitive root of the verb, and either the suffix -ând or -ind. |
Sydney: Let’s hear an example of a gerund. |
Mihai: a mânca becomes mâncând. |
Sydney: That’s "to eat" and "eating." How do we make the negative form of a gerund? |
Mihai: With the prefix ne. For example, neștiind. |
Sydney: "Not knowing." Let’s finish off with a couple of example sentences. |
Mihai: A fugit mâncând pământul. Nu cred că am făcut bine spunându-i ce s-a întâmplat. |
Sydney: "He ran like hell. I do not think it was a good idea to tell him what happened." |
Mihai: Spunându-și în gând că poate face asta, a reușit. |
Sydney: "Thinking he could do it, he succeeded." |
Outro
|
Sydney: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Mihai: La revedere. |
