INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, and welcome back to RomanianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 15 - Romanian High School Prom. Dana Here. |
Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai. |
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about expressing possibility and probability. The conversation takes place at a university canteen. |
Mihai: It's between Marcel and Simona. |
Dana: The speakers are classmates, therefore, they will speak informal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Fantastic! |
Dana: Listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
Marcel: Do you remember your high school prom? |
Simona: How can I forget that? It was memorable! |
Marcel: Really? I bet you will tell me that you participated in the beauty contest and you won the Miss Prom title. |
Simona: Well, not that! I was more shy back then. You probably would not even have recognized me. |
Marcel: Seriously? Come on, maybe you were not as outgoing as you are now, but you can not say you were shy. I can not imagine you that way. |
Simona: Yes, I was! Wait until you hear what happened to me. I was on the verge on transferring to another high school because of what happened. |
Marcel: Oh really? Come on, you’ve made me very curious. |
Simona: Yes, as in any story with teenagers, it's about a dramatic romance. Maybe you've heard about this story in the news. |
Marcel: In the news?? |
Simona: Yes. I'm the one to whom Laur, the famous blogger, wrote five years ago that he fell in love at first sight when he saw me at the subway. As you know, he posted a picture with me in order to find me and everything became viral. |
Marcel: Oh, you are Simona, the girl from the subway?! I remember the live news from the ball. I think he gathered over a million views on the video with the two of you live. That's fantastic! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Dana: Mihai, how does the education system work in Romania? |
Mihai: Romania’s educational system has changed considerably since the fall of communism in 1990. Now, it starts with kindergarten, elementary school, secondary and tertiary education. |
Dana: I heard that more and more students are getting involved in club activities these days. |
Mihai: Right. I can see more students and parents see the benefit in learning things outside the classroom. They choose to focus less on their classes and give more attention to extracurricular activities, in order to develop and enhance their skill set. |
Dana: What are the popular clubs among students, then? |
Mihai: Well, some students choose sports clubs for both health and social reasons. There are also some other students who choose clubs such as debate, chess, creative writing, photography and painting in order to cultivate their minds. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is... |
Mihai: a pune pariu |
Dana: meaning "to bet." |
Mihai: This is an expression composed of the verb a pune "to put" in infinitive form and the neuter noun pariu "bet" in singular. |
Dana: It literally translates as "to put bet" and means "to bet." |
Mihai: It is commonly used in informal contexts. A more formal alternative for this verbal phrase would be a fi convins că |
Dana: It means "to be sure that." |
Mihai: By the way, the simple verb a paria "to bet" is a synonym for this expression. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, Pun pariu că nu o să îl recunoști când o să îl vezi cu noua sa înfățișare total schimbată. |
Dana: ...which means "I bet you will not recognize him when you see him with his new totally changed appearance." |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: la prima vedere |
Dana: meaning "at first sight." |
Mihai: This expression is composed of the preposition la "at," the adjective prima "first" in feminine singular, and the feminine singular noun vedere "sight." |
Dana: It literally means "at first sight." For example… |
Mihai: Nu ar trebui sa luam o decizie la prima vedere. |
Dana: It means "We should not make a decision at first sight." |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about expressing possibility and probability. First, let’s learn how to express possibility or impossibility. |
Mihai: Here are the impersonal verbs to express possibility in Romania... poate |
Dana: "may" |
Mihai: poate că |
Dana: "maybe." After these, you can add a verb in indicative. For example… |
Mihai: Poate mănânc la cantină. |
Dana: "I may eat at the cafeteria." |
Mihai: Poate că mănânc la cantină. |
Dana: "Maybe I’m eating at the cafeteria." |
Mihai: Another verb is… se poate |
Dana: meaning "it can" or "it may" |
Mihai: a exista posibilitatea |
Dana: "there is the possibility" |
Mihai: a fi posibil |
Dana: "it is possible to." And we also have verbs to express impossibility. |
Mihai: Right. For example… e imposibil, cu neputință |
Dana: "It is impossible to." In a sentence, you can say… |
Mihai: Acest lucru este imposibil de soluționat. |
Dana: "This is impossible to solve." Next, let’s learn how to express probability or improbability. Here are the impersonal verbs and phrases to express probability or improbability in Romania. |
Mihai: a fi / a exista speranță |
Dana: literally meaning "to be hope that", and means “to hope.” Then, you can add a verb in conjunctive. |
Mihai: pesemne |
Dana: "probably" or "perhaps." Then, you can add a verb in indicative. And, here are the verbs to express improbability. |
Mihai: e improbabil |
Dana: "it is unlikely," then you can add a verb in conjunctive. |
Mihai: probabil că nu |
Dana: "probably not." Listeners, you can find more examples in the lesson notes, so make sure to check them out. |
