Maryssa: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Romanian Vocabulary, Season 1, Lesson 5! In this lesson, you'll learn five essential words and phrases related to food and drink. Maryssa: The most traditional sweet thing you will find in every Romanian house is cozonac — a sweet bread filled with a walnut and cocoa filling. This sweet bread is made on several occasions, including Christmas or New Year's Eve, but for the Easter table, this is a must. Nowadays, cozonac can be bought from most of the bakeries and the price is very cheap, but most grandmothers will prefer to prepare their own secret recipe, even though the process can take more than five hours sometimes.

Maryssa: Every Romanian child has eaten this simple dessert at least once. It's a pudding made of semolina and milk and can be seasoned with cinnamon or with a preferred jam.

As a fun fact: papanași are never served as one piece, but two, this way you can share it with someone else.

Maryssa: Traditional Romanian pastries coated in nuts and honey. The form of this pastry is a figure eight and represents the human body. There are two types of mucenici in Romania: in the North they are baked and then topped with honey and walnut, but in the South they are boiled in a syrup made of water, sugar, and walnuts.
