Mihai: Bună. I'm Mihai. |
Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn about negotiating. The conversation takes place at a real estate office. |
Mihai: It's between a real-estate agent and Masanobu. |
Dana: The speakers are strangers in a customer service context; therefore, they will speak formal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Agent imobiliar: Ce fel de apartament căutați? |
Masanobu: Vreau un apartament spațios, cu trei camere. |
Agent imobiliar: Avem un apartament cu trei camere, mobilat, în Piața Victoriei. |
Masanobu: Cât este chiria? |
Agent imobiliar: 600 (șase sute) de euro pe lună. Când doriți să vă mutați? |
Masanobu: Începând cu luna viitoare. Dar este prea scump. |
Agent imobiliar: Putem negocia. |
Masanobu: Atunci aș dori să îl văd, se poate? |
Agent imobiliar: Sigur, domnule. |
Dana: Listen to the conversation one more time slowly. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Dana: I hope Masanobu can find a good place to live that is also affordable. |
Mihai: Me, too. Maybe he will find a place near to some tourist sites. |
Dana: What is a popular urban attraction for tourists? |
Mihai: Dracula’s Castle is popular due to the stories around Vlad Dracul Tepes. |
Dana: I hear that the Romanian Orthodox churches and citadels are beautiful and popular, too. |
Mihai: That’s right. You can see them in cities such as Brasov, Sighisoara, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Alba-Iulia, and Iasi. |
Dana: What kind of things are there to see in Bucharest? |
Mihai: Tourists can explore the historical city center, visit the Palace of Parliament, and enjoy the colorful nightlife. |
Dana: It sounds good! Some people don’t like to visit cities though, and would rather go to the countryside. |
Mihai: That’s also an amazing destination for tourists as they can discover the various traditional houses, local traditions, and what it’s like to live as a regular Romanian. |
Dana: Are regular Romanians welcoming? |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
Mihai: ce fel de... |
Dana: Meaning "what kind of..." |
Dana: This is an interrogative expression. |
Mihai: It’s made out of the relative pronoun ce, and the neuter noun fel. |
Dana: This noun means “kind” in its singular form. |
Mihai: Finally is the preposition de, which means “of.” |
Dana: It literally means “what kind of…” |
Mihai: You can use this to ask someone about something specific. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Nu știe ce fel de haine să își ia la ea. |
Dana: ..which means "She does not know what kind of clothes to take with her." |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: pe lună |
Dana: Meaning "per month." |
Dana: This is an adverbial structure. |
Mihai: First is the preposition pe, meaning “on” and then lună. |
Dana: This is a feminine noun in singular form, meaning “moon.” It literally means “on month,” but we can say “per month.” |
Mihai: It’s used to talk about something that happens on a monthly basis. |
Dana: So it can be used for rent. |
Mihai: You can also say per lună in more commercial settings. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Câștigă cu două sute de euro mai mult pe lună la noul ei loc de muncă. |
Dana: .. which means "She earns two hundred euros more per month at her new job." |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

Mihai: A fitting way to start! This is începând cu. |
Dana: It is a structure with an adverbial function. |
Mihai: It is made from the gerund form of the verb a începe, “to start” and the preposition cu “with.” |
Dana: Let’s hear some examples. |
Mihai: Prețurile mașinilor se reduc începând cu 30 decembrie. |
Dana: “The car prices are decreasing starting with the 30th of December.” |
Mihai: Hai să reducem din cheltuieli începând cu luna mai. |
Dana: “Let’s cut on our expenses starting from May.” Now, let’s move on to “too expensive.” |
Mihai: This is prea scump. It is made from the adverb prea “too” and the adjective scump. |
