Dana: In this lesson, you’ll learn some basic math expressions. The conversation takes place at a bar. |

Dana: That’s a shame. Romania is in the EU now though, and I know that there is support for researchers and scientists from the EU. |
Mihai: That’s right. In fact, many researchers in Romania have applied for grants from the EU so they can do their research. |
Dana: That’s a good idea, I think. |
Mihai: There’s a lot of talent in Romania, and many high school and college students have won awards at international competitions for their work. |
Dana: What about the arts in Romania? Are arts and humanities supported any better? |
Mihai: They get less attention than technological topics. |
Dana: What do Romanians that are interested in these topics do? |
Mihai: They often go and study abroad. |

Dana: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Mihai: Glumești? |
Dana: Meaning "Are you kidding?" |
Dana: This is an interrogative sentence. |
Mihai: Yes, it’s made from the interrogative form of the verb a glumi. |
Dana: This means “to joke.” In this case, it’s in the second person singular form and literally means “are you joking?” |
Mihai: You can use it when you are surprised about what someone is saying to you. |
Dana: You can also use it for more negative situations, such as offense. |
Mihai: In more formal situations, the second person plural form is used - Glumiți? |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Glumești când zici că s-a stricat mașina? |
Dana: ..which means "Are you kidding when you say the car was broken?" |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: Ce este? |
Dana: Meaning "What is it?" |
Dana: This is a common interrogative expression. |
Mihai: It’s made from the relative pronoun ce, meaning “what,” and the verb a fi in simple present tense, third person singular form. |
Dana: That verb means “to be.” It literally translates as “What is it?” |
Mihai: You can use this to ask someone what is happening, or what they want from you. |
Dana: Is there a more formal way to say this? |
Mihai: Yes - Despre ce este vorba? meaning "What is it about?" |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Ce este? Ce s-a întâmplat cu tine, Mihai? |
Dana: .. which means "What is it? What is the matter with you, Mihai?" |

Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about basic math expressions. |
Dana: Let’s start with the most basic - addition and subtraction. |
Mihai: “Addition” is adunarea, and “subtraction” is scăderea. |
Dana: What about the verb versions? What is “to add?” |
Mihai: a aduna |
Dana: And “to subtract?” |
Mihai: a scădea. All of the conjugations are in the lesson notes. |
Dana: Now, what about the mathematical signs? How do we say “plus” and “minus?” |
Mihai: plus, minus |
Dana: And finally, how about “equals?” |

Dana: Now that we know the basic words, we can hear a basic equation. |
Mihai: Doi plus doi egal patru. |
Dana: “Two plus two equals four.” |
Mihai: Zece minus unu plus doi egal unsprezece. |
Dana: “Ten minus one plus two equals eleven.” Next, let’s look at multiplication. |
Mihai: “Multiplication” is înmulțire. When talking about a multiplication operation in Romanian, we use the adverb ori. |
Dana: “Times” |
Mihai: or the participle de/înmulțit |
Dana: That means “multiplied” in singular masculine form. This form is always the one used. |
Mihai: And then there is the preposition cu |
Dana: “With.” Let’s hear an example of each method. |
Mihai: Trei ori trei egal nouă. |
Dana: “Three times three equals nine.” |
Mihai: Trei (de)înmulțit cu trei fac nouă. |
Dana: “Three multiplied by three is nine.” Finally, is division. |
Mihai: “Division” is împărțire, and împărțit la means... |
Dana: “divided by.” We’ve already heard the other components of the equation, so let’s jump right into some examples. |
Mihai: Doisprezece împărţit la doi egal şase. |
Dana: “Twelve divided by two equals six.” |
Mihai: Trei împărțit la trei egal unu. |
Dana: “Three divided by three equals one.” |
