Dana: The speakers are friends; therefore, they will speak informal Romanian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Mihai: Tu ai prietenă? |
Masanobu: Da, am. De ce? |
Mihai: Doar de curiozitate. De când sunteți împreună? |
Masanobu: De 2 (doi) ani. Tu? |
Mihai: Eu nu am, dar în ultima vreme îmi doresc să am una. |
Masanobu: Și ce gen de fete îți plac? |
Mihai: Nu am un gen anume, dar vreau să avem hobby-uri comune. |

Masanobu: For 2 years. You? |
Mihai: I don't have one, but lately I wish I did. |
Masanobu: And what type of girls do you like? |
Mihai: I don't have a certain type, but I want us to have common hobbies. |
Masanobu: Very well. I'm sure you’ll find one. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Dana: Some people would consider the questions in this conversation to be a little personal. |
Mihai: I guess you could say that. |
Dana: How do Romanians respond to personal questions? |
Mihai: Romanians are usually friendly and welcoming, but they can be reserved with personal information. |
Dana: So you shouldn’t ask personal questions? |
Mihai: Once a Romanian person gets to know you and builds trust with you, they’ll be more open. |
Dana: Are there certain circumstances where personal questions are definitely frowned upon? |
Mihai: You shouldn’t ask them when in a business situation. |
Dana: Don’t mix business and personal details, right? |
Mihai: Right. But over food and drinks, it’s fine. |
Dana: So you won’t get asked many questions when you go to Romania? |
Mihai: Ah, Romanians are interested in foreigners, so you’ll probably get many questions! |
Dana: Okay, now onto the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Mihai: de curiozitate |
Dana: Meaning "out of curiosity." |
Dana: This is a compound adverb of modality. |
Mihai: It’s formed from the preposition de, meaning "of," and curiozitate, a feminine noun in the singular form. |
Dana: This noun means “curiosity.” The phrase translates literally to “of curiosity.” |
Mihai: It’s used to express the reason behind an action; specifically, of being curious about an action. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. De curiozitate, cât este ceasul acum? |
Dana: ..which means "Out of curiosity, what time is it now?" |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: în ultima vreme |
Dana: Meaning "lately." |
Dana: This is a compound adverb of place. |
Mihai: First is the preposition în, meaning "in," next is the feminine singular form of ultim, meaning "last,” and finally the feminine noun vreme. |
Dana: This noun means “time,” in its singular form. So it translates literally to “in the last time,” but we interpret it as “lately.” |
Mihai: You use it to describe a period of time that is close to the moment of speaking. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. În ultima vreme adorm mai greu. |
Dana: .. which means "Lately, I have difficulties falling asleep." |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

Mihai: It is! It also used mâine, which means “tomorrow.” |
Dana: How do you say “never?” |
