KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Mihai: Bine ai venit! |
Dana: Meaning "Welcome!" |
Dana: This is an imperative sentence. |
Mihai: It’s formed from the positive form of bine. |
Dana: Meaning “well.” |
Mihai: And the second person singular of the verb a veni |
Dana: Which means “to come.” So altogether, it translates literally to “well, you came.” |
Mihai: Bine ai venit! is the most common expression to welcome someone visiting you. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Bine ai venit în grădina mea! |
Dana: ..which means "Welcome to my garden!" |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: Sper că... |
Dana: Meaning "I hope that..." |
Mihai: This is formed from the verb a spera, "to hope," and the conjunction că. |
Dana: Meaning “that.” So, the phrase translates literally to “I hope that.” |
Mihai: You can use it to talk about your expectations towards certain situations. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Sper că prindem trenul. |
Dana: .. which means "I hope we catch the train." |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn about describing future events using verbs. |
Dana: We use the future tense to talk about actions that will happen later. How do we use the future tense in Romanian? |
Mihai: There are several ways. The most common is called the literary future, which uses the auxiliary verb a voi. |
Dana: This means “will.” You use that with the infinitive of the verb to conjugate. |
Mihai: For example, Eu voi pleca la munte. |
Dana: “I will go to the mountains.” What are the other ways of expressing the future? |
Mihai: You can use o plus the conjunctive of the verb to conjugate. For example, O să merg la mare. |
Dana: “I will go to the seaside.” You can also use the indicative present of “to have” plus the conjunctive of the verb to conjugate. |
Mihai: “To have” is a avea. An example is Am să merg mâine cu tine. |
Dana: “I will go tomorrow with you.” Another way is the verb “to follow” in the third person indicative present, plus the conjunctive of the verb to conjugate |
Mihai: “To follow” is a urma. An example is Urmează să meargă în Japonia în curând.” |
Dana: “He is going to go to Japan soon.” Now, how do we make the simple future tense. |
Mihai: You use the auxiliary verb a voi, meaning “will” plus the infinitive of the verb to conjugate. |
Dana: Let’s hear some example sentences. |
Mihai: Când veți ajunge la muntele Fuji, să faceți o poză și pentru noi. |
Dana: “When you get to Mount Fuji, take a picture for us too.” |
Mihai: Cred că vom avea mai mult timp de povești dacă plecăm cu avionul de 9. |
Dana: “I think we will have more time to chat if we leave on the 9 o’clock airplane.” |
Mihai: Vă vom aștepta în gară la Brașov. |
Dana: “We will wait for you at the central station in Brasov.” |
Mihai: We can use verbs of frequency in the simple future tense to add extra connotation to the sentences. |
Dana: For example, they can express certainty. |
Mihai: Such as Sigur va ploua. |
Dana: “It will surely rain.” Or doubt, when asking a question. |
Mihai: Veți ajunge la timp pentru concert? |
Dana: “Will you arrive in time for the concert?” |
Outro
|
Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Mihai: La revedere. |
