Dana: It sounds like Andreea had a good vacation. Where are popular tourist spots in Romania? |
Mihai: The Transylvania region is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Romania. |
Dana: Why is that? |
Mihai: Because there are well preserved historical sites like Sighisoara, the Bran Castle, Sibiu and Brasov. |
Dana: Brasov is a city, right? It’s surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. |
Mihai: That’s right. One place I love is Peles Castle, which is in Sinaia, at the bottom of the Bucegi Mountains. |
Dana: What’s so special about this castle? |
Mihai: It was finished in 1883 and has 160 rooms, all decorated with the finest artwork from European artists. |
Dana: It sounds beautiful. Do you have any other recommendations? |
Mihai: Yeah, I recommend the Bucovina Monasteries. There are beautiful murals and frescoes on the walls. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Dana: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Mihai: Prin jurul orașului |
Dana: Meaning "Around the town." |
Mihai: This comes from the compound preposition prin jurul. |
Dana: Which means “around.” It comes from the articulated form of a neuter noun. |
Mihai: Yeah, the noun is oraș, meaning “town.” The compound preposition is formed by the preposition prin, meaning “through.” And then there is the articulated form of the neuter noun jur |
Dana: Which means “surrounding” or “place.” |
Mihai: This can be used to talk about an area of town that isn’t strictly defined. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. M-am întâlnit cu el prin jurul orașului. |
Dana: ..which means "I met him around the town." |
Dana: Okay, what's the next word? |
Mihai: Și mie |
Dana: Meaning "Me (emphasized)." |
Mihai: It is an expression formed from the modal adverb și "too" and the pronoun mie |
Dana: Which means “me.” You use this phrase to emphasize a solicitation from the speaker on a specific action on the behalf of someone else. |
Mihai: It can also be used for other personal nouns. |
Dana: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say.. Zi-mi și mie cum să fac asta. |
Dana: .. which means "Tell me how to do this." |
Dana: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn verbs to describe past events. |
Dana: What past tense is most used in Romanian? |
Mihai: It is the compound perfect or perfectul compus. It is the only compound past tense. |
Dana: The other past tenses form without the need of other verbs. |
Mihai: The pattern for creating the compound perfect is; the auxiliary verb a avea |
Dana: Meaning “to have.” |
Mihai: Followed by a participle. The participles don’t adjust depending on number or gender, in this case. |
Dana: When do we use this tense? |
Mihai: When talking about an event that finished before the time of speaking. |
Dana: You can also use it to talk about an event that finishes before another event, even if that event is in the future. |
Mihai: For example Săptămâna viitoare vom fi fericiți că am terminat cu acest examen. |
Dana: “Next week we will be happy that we finished this exam.” |
Mihai: It is frequently accompanied by adverbial structures such as acum |
Dana: “ago” |
Mihai: and înainte cu.. |
Dana: “before,” as well as others. In the lesson notes there are many examples of verbs conjugated to the compound perfect tense. We’ll concentrate on sentence examples here, though. |
Mihai: Right. Ați mers și la cabana din vârful muntelui? |
Dana: “Did you go to the cottage on top of the mountain too?” |
Mihai: Au fost veseli tot timpul petrecerii. |
Dana: “They were cheerful the whole party.” |
Mihai: M-am simțit bine la voi acasă. |
Dana: “I felt good at your place.” |
Mihai: Mi-am văzut ochelarii pe masă. |
Dana: “I saw my glasses on the table.” |
Outro
|
Dana: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Mihai: La revedere. |
