KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is... |
Mihai: Ești ocupat? |
Becky: meaning "Are you busy?" Can you break this phrase down for us? |
Mihai: Ești means "you are." It’s the 2nd person singular of a fi. |
Becky: This means “to be.” |
Mihai: Ocupat is an adjective meaning "busy." |
Becky: You can use this phrase to ask if someone is available so you can make further plans. |
Mihai: This is informal. In a formal situation, you should use sunteți ocupat? |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say, Ești ocupat joi? |
Becky: ...which means "Are you busy on Thursday?" |
Becky: Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Mihai: Ce zici de...? |
Becky: meaning "How about...?" Can you explain this phrase for us? |
Mihai: Ce is an indefinite pronoun meaning "what." Zici is the 2nd person singular of a zice. |
Becky: This means “to say.” |
Mihai: Finally is de, meaning “of.” |
Becky: Literally, this means “what do you say of?” You can use it to ask what someone thinks about a proposal you make. |
Mihai: This is informal. In a formal situation, you should use ce ziceți de...? |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say, Ce zici de un jogging în weekend? |
Becky: ...which means "How about jogging on the weekend?" |
Becky: Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Mihai: Așa rămâne. |
Becky: meaning "It's settled." This is another phrase, so again can you break it down for us? |
Mihai: Așa is an adverb meaning "like this" or "like that." Rămâne is the third person singular of a rămâne. |
Becky: This means “to remain.” |
Mihai: You can use this to say that a decision has been made. |
Becky: It’s a good way of telling other people that the decision is done. |
Mihai: That’s right. |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Mihai: Sure. For example, you can say, E bun planul tău, așa rămâne! |
Becky: ...which means "Your plan is good; it's settled." |
Becky: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn about indefinite adverbs and pronouns. |
Becky: Specifically, we’re going to look at words that begin with “some.” |
Mihai: In Romanian, these words end with the suffix va. |
Becky: Let’s check a few words. What’s “somewhere?” |
Mihai: Undeva. |
Becky: And “someone?” |
Mihai: Cineva. |
Becky: Listeners, can you tell that they have the same suffix? There are more examples listed in the lesson notes. |
Mihai: A lot of these words are the same as words we learned before; only they end with the suffix va, instead of beginning with the prefix ori. |
Becky: Let’s hear some sentence examples. |
Mihai: Sigur ajungem acolo cândva. |
Becky: “We’ll surely get there sometime.” |
Mihai: Vrei ceva de la cofetărie? |
Becky: “Do you want something from the confectionery shop?” |
Mihai: Three of the most used indefinite adverbs in Romanian are cândva, undeva, and cumva. |
Becky: These are “sometime," “somewhere," and “somehow," respectively. |
Mihai: Usually the verb is positioned before the indefinite adverb, but sometimes the adverb comes first. |
Becky: If the adverb comes first, then the emphasis shifts to the adverb. Mihai, can you give us some examples? |
Mihai: Vino în vizită cândva! |
Becky: “Come visit sometime!” |
Mihai: Cumva te descurci tu. |
Becky: “Somehow you’ll find a way.” |
Mihai: Two of the most used indefinite pronouns are ceva and cineva. |
Becky: These are “something” and “someone," respectively. |
Mihai: Again, these usually follow a verb but can come before the verb. |
Becky: And just like the indefinite adverbs, if the pronoun comes first, then the emphasis of the sentence is on the pronoun. To finish off this lesson, can we have some more examples, please? |
Mihai: Este ceva în cutie? |
Becky: “Is there something in the box?” |
Mihai: Ceva sigur se schimbă. |
Becky: “Something will change.” |
Outro
|
Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Mihai: La revedere. |
