POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: I want to ask you about something that isn’t related to the conversation we just heard. Is that okay, Mihai?
Mihai: Of course! As long as it’s something nice...
Becky: It is! I was just wondering what foreign languages are taught in Romania.
Mihai: Good question! Before 1989, learning English in Romania was pretty limited. The most popular foreign language was French.
Becky: What about after 1989?
Mihai: Since then, English has become more widespread.
Becky: Can Romanian people speak English?
Mihai: Most people up to the age of around 40 or 45 can speak conversational English.
Becky: And older people speak a bit of French?
Mihai: Usually, yes.
Becky: So, will shop staff speak to you in English?
Mihai: Even if they can’t, they might try.
Becky: That’s very kind of them! Okay, now onto the vocab.

Mihai: Bună ziua, aveți ouă aici?
Becky: “Hello, do you have eggs here?”
Mihai: Another type of store you may have to go to is a health and beauty store.
Becky: Or a hair salon.
Mihai: Yes, knowing the right words in a hair salon is important, or you might end up with a horrible haircut!
Becky: How do you say “I want it shorter on the sides.”
Mihai: Vreau mai scurt pe lateral.
Becky: And lastly, “No thank you, that’s enough.”
Mihai: Nu, mulțumesc, este destul.
